GREEK TERMINOLOGY

Greek Dictionary If going Greek still feels a little Greek to you, this dictionary will come in handy.

Active Member:
One who has been initiated and active in the collegiate chapter

Alumnus/Alumna:
A member who has graduated from college

Bid:
A formal invitation issued to an individual to join a fraternity or sorority

Chapter:
The name given to a college branch of a national fraternity/sorority

Initiation:
A formal ceremony by which new members become active members

IFC:
The governing body of fraternities at U of M (Interfraternity Council)

Legacy:
A student whose parent, grandparent, or sister is an alumnus/alumna or active member of a fraternity/sorority New

Member:
One who has accepted an invitation (bid) to become a member of the chapter. After a period of education in history, ideals and traditions of the organization, he or she may be initiated

Panhellenic:
The governing body of sororities at U of M (PHC)

Philanthropy:
A charity, fundraising or community service event

Pledge:
To accept an invitation of membership in a fraternity or sorority, participate in a member education program, and then become a member of an organization. “Pledge” may also refer to someone entering the member education program

Recruitment:
The process for fraternities and sororities to meet potential new members and for interested students to learn more about membership benefits and requirements
